A mortgage fraud police blotter

Ever read The Mortgage Fraud Blog? It's a national police blotter of mortgage fraud arrests and convictions. Bid riggers, crooked lawyers, crooked brokers, flippers, skimmers, grifters... this stuff should be morbidly fascinating, but taken item by item by item it's just as dull as a local criminal court plea-and-arraignment session. It's just seeing the grinder at work, too close up to see patterns in the way it works, or how people got into it, or what happens to them next.

Question being, how far back is the right distance to stand from this process to perceive both the pattern and the grain of it?
