Under the pavement, the beach

It's commonly known that houses near Ocean Beach in San Francisco were plopped on top of the sand dunes. What's not common is the chance to look under one and see that the sand is still there, still shifting.

Above is a picture I took in summer 2009 of the "foundation" of a house on 45th Ave. in San Francisco, about four or five blocks from where Ocean Beach meets the Pacific. If I remember correctly, the sand was spilling out of the area where a ground-floor garage would be put under a house that had its main living area on the second floor.

The broken chunk at the center probably belonged to a poured concrete foundation.
