About the proposed Ryan housing cuts

Just getting around to the threatened further housing cuts in the horrid "Path to Prosperity" House Republican budget proposal. The proposal text is worth a glance just for the semiotics. It's full of that right-wing 1990s "responsibility"/peonage language that's so effectively parodied in the BBC's "House of Cards" TV drama. (We've been watching the videos lately at home -- good show if sometimes painful to watch.) Naturally the proposal uses that dishonest reading of the term "self-sufficiency" to mean labor by the laboring classes (see previous item). The other night I joined the communal wingding in a comment thread over at Echidne of the Snakes about what the currently proposed cuts mean for women's involuntary servitude. I don't have much more to say about them here, or anyway not that's specific to housing.

Links to people who know more about this than I do:

- CBPP says Chairman Paul Ryan of the House Budget Committee "gets roughly two-thirds of his huge budget cuts from programs for lower-income Americans".

- News analysis from NH&RA (that is, the Dworbell consulting office, same people who run NRMLA) noting the Republican plan calls for time limits and work requirements on public housing -- that is, the same crud-combo that, in that bad year of 1996, turned the AFDC cash benefit for a child's entire childhood into the five-year-limited, non-guaranteed TANF we have now.
