Guard towers + California

Lately visited the historic Russian outpost in Fort Ross on the Sonoma coast. Familiar story for California: although it wasn't formally a prison, the guard towers were as much for keeping the officially friendly working population in as for keeping officially unfriendly outsiders out. The fort was built in the early 19th century, long before the end of Russian serfdom. The Russian, Aleutian, and local tribal people who worked at Fort Ross were all more or less indentured.

California historic landmarks are kind of not big on liberation stories.

[P.S. 6/1/11: The title of this post echoes the dimly remembered New Jersey state mascot, Perfy. He went with the slogan, "New Jersey + You: Perfect Together."]
