HUD gets organized on disaster housing referrals

An emailed press release (I can't find a posted version) appeared today from HUD promoting the National Housing Locator System, an actual online exchange designed to match landlords with tenants in disasters.

It's so nice to see this -- or, rather, it's about damn time.

Links in the latter part of this post describe the wasteful stupidity of FEMA housing referrals during the early aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In September and October 2005, sometimes it seemed that well-meaning property managers were being asked to drop offers of housing through an electronic slot with nothing on the other side.
