Park Hotel fire update: small mercies

The Chronicle has yet to mention the Park Hotel's 82 Dept. of Building Inspection complaints since 1995, but it does have some good news: Paco the Chihuahua was rescued the morning after the fire from a closet in a damaged building on the Russ Street alley next to the hotel. (Still no word on the cat reportedly lost by tenant Danielle of, apparently, the same Russ Street building.)

To be entirely clear, I do not have any theories of my own about how the fire started. Fire Dept. spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge told the Chronicle: "Investigators were told that someone had started the fire by pouring bourbon on a barbecue. But “at this point,” Talmadge said, “they have not found anything to substantiate any of those barbecue claims or anything like that.”"
