Denounce your neighbor, avoid deportation

Oh, shudder, no.

About this new federal plan to gather crime victims' and witnesses' fingerprints to protect them from deportation -- the initial human-rights response is focusing on the collection of fingerprints, as well it should. But there's another thing.

If witness status can protect an undocumented immigrant against deportation, that's a huge formal incentive to immigrants to become witnesses. It's just a weensy step from there to forcing members of undocumented communities to denounce each other (honestly or not) to authorities, on pain of deportation.
