Took a walking tour with a historian the other day. She said a lot of the old houses in a New England downtown had porches until the 1950s. But then everyone went "minimalist," tearing down porches, getting rid of the gingerbread, removing everything Victorian/Gothic that would come off.
We asked my mom about it later. Did she remember people taking porches off houses in the 1950s? Oh, yes. Well, what did they think they were doing? Modernizing. Did they think they were increasing property values? Probably. So why didn't they want porches any more? They didn't sit on them. Why not -- were they driving somewhere else in their cars? No, she said, they were inside watching TV. Oh.
