Found some history, but still nothing about the future, of the mysterious Eng-Skell Building on Howard Street between Sixth and Seventh. Been expecting for fifteen years that any moment some developer will pull the stacks of stuff out from behind those windows and turn it into expensive condos.
Per this history page for what's now ESCO Foods, the place was built in 1930 by pioneers in the soda-fountain business, to house "...a laboratory, manufacturing plant, warehouse and office space. A
Research Department was maintained which employed a staff of trained
chemists. The new facility allowed for the continuous development of new
products for the soda fountain, confectionery, ice cream and bakery
trades, and solidified Eng-Skell's position as the industry leader."
