Victorian times beget Victorian literature

Classic Victor Hugo, this BART station agent losing his job for giving transit tickets to a poor student. Classic Dickens, the kindly donor lady who guaranteed the student's transportation until his graduation next year.

Starting to realize those grand old heart-yankers of the European industrialization years didn't just happen to enjoy writing tales of overblown economic contrast: stories like that were in their air.
