What's ownership?

Feature at NPR, via @urbandata, mourning loss of "homeownership" to millenials -- i.e. Americans in their lengthening twenties, many not as settled as they'd expected to be.

Neal Coleman, married with a young daughter, quoted saying, "You're freer when you own your own home, your own land. You're not beholden to a renter's contract, or lease."

Don't know about that. Grass being always greener and so on, but, if things go badly pear-shaped, a renter can move out. For an "owner" who lives beholden to a lender, it's not that simple. Didn't we all just kind of learn that?
