More on commuting as a poverty issue

I've added to yesterday's Storify about suburbs as a bad place to be poor. There's suddenly a turn in online discussion toward thinking about how poor people will get to work if the rich people are the ones who live conveniently downtown.

As a possible worst-case scenario, thinking especially about Joseph Lelyveld's account of horribly long bus commutes for South African workers who, under the apartheid laws, were banned from living in center cities.
