Such a good feature with photo essay on Merced County in this morning's San Francisco Chronicle. A thing about it is, writer Drew Joseph talked with a lot of different people about the hard times, and didn't talk with or about them differently depending on either housing status or ethnic background. Some would count as middle-class, there's a lady in public housing, another staying with friends living half out of her van, a woman in the photo essay pushing a cart -- and they're all interviewed as citizens of the town, not as specimens of any particular housing status. There isn't talk of mutual fear. The distancing label "folks" doesn't appear even once. Same respect in the captions to Mike Kepka's good photos.
