Another ominous thought from the GAO

Fresh from recommending nastier immigration checks on housing applicants, now the GAO suggests linking Americans' freedom of movement to getting right with the tax man. Headline: "Potential for Using Passport Issuance to Increase Collection of Unpaid Taxes." So, OK, your basic international grifter or squirreler of Cayman accounts doesn't deserve much sympathy. Still, it reminds me a little of that old jingle from Phil Ochs: "...But somehow it is strange to hear the State Department say/ You are living in the free world, in the free world you must stay."

A "lodging" issue in a way: it's about where people get to lodge, and where they get wedged.
