Meanwhile, um, a list of the foreign police forces our tax dollars are supporting.

OK, this is not exactly about housing except for the tax money not being spent on getting people indoors. But it's a great slice of appalling: GAO reports (podcast also here) on the extent to which we the people of the United States of America are sending money to foreign police forces in kinds of places where you would really not wish to tangle with the police. From the report:
"Over the past few years, the United States has increased its emphasis on training and equipping foreign police as a means of supporting a wide range of U.S. foreign-policy goals, including countering terrorists overseas and stopping the flow of narcotics to the United States. Funding for these activities has increased significantly since we last reported on these issues in 1992...."
Not just your basic Iraq, Afghanistan, Mexico, but also paradises of due process like Kyrgyzstan, Paraguay, Serbia, Sierra Leone... Graphs are on Pages 10 and 19-24.
